Hello. How are you GUYS doing today? (in a british accent). It's me Wolvenciel again with an overdue post on another mecha anime, Comet Lucifer. Now, when it first aired, it had a lot of positive feedback. THEY ARE ALL LIES. That positive feedback was for that one fighting animation at the earlier part of the show. Let's get on to it now shall we?
(from left) Roman, Otto, Felia, Sogo, Moura, Kaon. |
Oh you thought that was the subtitle? Too bad. THAT'S THE FRIGGIN SUMMARY. I'm too lazy to count but apparently the story had so many people shouting out names (especially Sogo and Felia) rather than an actual dialogue.
Rants aside, Comet Lucifer is about a Giftian (the name of the planet is Gift) boy who likes rocks and suddenly stumbles into an ancient mine of some sort that contained a red stone that gave a much higher energy output than the normal everyday Giftdium (an energy ore or something) and surprisingly, turned into a girl (Felia) and suddenly everyone wants the girl. So yeah. The story tells you about Sogo and his adventures with Felia.
Sigh. See. Even she's unimpressed by that summary. |
THAT ONE AWESOME BATTLE
Now, let me explain this first. When Comet Lucifer first came out, people were putting it up on a pedestal. They were like "OH GOD LOOK AT THAT ANIMATION. THEM 3DCG WITH ALL THE MECH'S WEIGHT TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT". It turns out that one battle was it. The other battles seemed lackluster compared to the first battle maybe due to the fact that they didn't actually fight most of the time (Really it was mostly Moura getting his ass kicked trying to protect the whole gang) or probably because 60% of the battles afterwards were airborne shootouts rather than melee.
Seriously the first fight was nice and all that. Sigh. |
NO BATTLE DAMAGE WHATSOEVER
Okay that might be pushing it too much I guess. I don't know how hard it would be to add battle damage to these 3DCG mechs so I'm not gonna complain much but yeah. Not many battle damage can be seen throughout the anime (save that first fight and a few more approaching the end of the show). I mean, I know that thing is like invincible or something but still. Do you actually need a fatal wound to get a battle damage, Moura? Do you?
That's... Quite serious for a battle damage but yeah it'll do huh. |
THE TRUE RANT STARTS HERE
Enough with the nitpicking then. What I am about to say here is mostly about how the story is arranged. Its weird really. At first I really thought the anime would be one of those fun adventure kind of anime ya know. The opening gave off that vibe. But no. They flipped the "serious" switch and did all those fights and death scenes that gave off this Gundam-ish vibe. I was fine with that. I was like, yeah okay I can go with this too. Why not, right?
Every episode has a compulsory accident scene. Even Sogo is tired of it. |
However, right after that fight, the anime returns to its cheerful slice of life manner which mostly involved this one soldier from the first fight (his name is Gus, I'm gonna call him that from now on) going on a wild goose chase to get his hands on Felia for reasons unknown. Fine, it was cute seeing Felia juggle curry and vegetables and all sorts of stuff with her power and all but that's just it. It had nothing to do with the plot at all.
Cute, isn't she? |
It was only after episode 8 that the anime started to move its plot again, albeit in a very confusing, jumbled up manner. If you are wondering, this is where stuff gets serious again. There were so many things exposed and explained in the last four episodes that it made the anime feel cramped and disorganized. Sure, the blog master says almost all anime take this kind of approach these days, 80% slice of life, 20% serious plot stuff but personally I think it is one of the things that brings down Comet Lucifer.
Oh and post-episode 8 Sogo becomes an emotionally disturbed young man for some reason. Sigh. |
PRETTY SURE IT AIN'T SUPPOSED TO BE SERIOUS
I didn't explain everything I should because I wanted to keep this spoiler-free but basically the anime likes to jump from cheerful to serious and then back a lot of times and it kind of makes you wonder. Is it supposed to be taken seriously or not? Having watched the anime, I think its the latter. Maybe the guy who wrote this original story wanted it to be serious but I guess it didn't turn out that way. Have a look at some of these screenshots I took and see for yourselves, yeah?
TELL ME WHY THIS BITCH CAN HOLD HER GROUNDS AGAINST MECHS. TELL ME. PLEASE. |
THE HELL ARE YOU AFRAID OF? ITS NOT A NUKE. ITS A FRIGGIN CAR. |
Oh yeah. The guys have weird walking animation. Especially this scene. |
OH WELL...
Ultimately, the show itself isn't so bad. It has it fun cutesy times and its weird plot twists and its elaborate bad guy schemes and all that (sounds mighty complicated ain't it?) but I guess it was presented in a wrong way. It didn't explain everything slowly from the beginning and just lumped every single thing at the end of the anime. I just... In the end the story is what matters the most, you know? And when that is done wrong, everything else just falls apart (but yeah there are more than one wrong in this anime anyways). The anime could be enjoyable if you like cutesy lolis and winged mechs but that's it.
Winged mechs. Much Awesome. Such Cybuster. *Coughs* |
